What if Momentum is interfered by Postponement?
What do you do when you are experiencing Momentum, but you cannot act on it, since other things take priority. Things you cannot postpone anymore, since it’s already last minute?
It’s awesome when you are experiencing Momentum and whenever possible it’s important to act on it, but reality is that it can interfere with other tasks that need to be done. Unfortunately, you can only postpone certain things for so long. So what if, as a result, you cannot stay in that flow and hold on to Momentum? Are there possibilities to hold onto that flow, even with only little time to spare?
One thing that always helps is to write down little scribblings, if only a few words or short sentences. It’s something you can go back to and from there you might be able to pick up on where you left off more easily.
Another idea would be to record a video. You don’t necessarily have to publish it, but it could most certainly help you understand your line of thoughts once you get to pick it up again.
Another aspect is dealing with the frustration of wanting to go on, but not being able to. Is just writing down little scribblings and/or recording a video enough or do you need to do more?
What are the possibilities to continue anyway despite not having much time to spare? Well actually, just do it, but try to stick to the most crucial stuff, literally that flow. Write down all other elements, which are no yet cohesive, but are giving you a sense of direction. Just make sure, you stay within a certain timeframe, give or take a few minutes.
You can also check what your creative time zone is and dedicate that time to the flow and do the other necessary stuff around this timeframe.
Remember that doing something is better than doing nothing, since getting back in that flow is a lot of work, once you’ve lost it. Having said so, think about the opposite as well.
Next time you really need to do something, do it in the time you’re not very inspired and somewhat out of the flow. It’s time which can’t be just optimal for your project anyway, so why not spend it on something which you know is going to have priority in a matter of days.
Basically it’s dealing with the least worst option. Postponing will catch up on you. Not thinking about what to do in the best time/energy zone will cost you too.
So after having been confronted with this situation, you need to think about what you are going to do differently next time, so you can keep the Momentum, not matter what. Once you’ve come to understand how much it has cost you, you can decide on how to prevent this from happened next time.
To add a little something positive to what it is you keep postponing, remember that in the end it will feel good to have it finished. But it will feel a lot better if it hasn’t cost you all the energy and Momentum you needed to continue your flow and working on what was really needing all your creativity.
So to recap it all:
- Don’t postpone what you can do, when not being in Momentum anyway;
- Work on your project which gives you Momentum, knowing it will give you so much energy, that whatever else you need to do, will go easier too;
- Write down the scribblings to remember what your ideas were and regain focus later on;
- Create a video telling yourself what’s on your mind, so you can pick up on your reasoning later on;
- Make sure you remember that feeling that not having been able to continue your flow is costing you in then end. Write down what that feeling was like, so you’ll remember for the next time and not go there ever again;
- Give yourself a compliment after finishing that task you got to postpone and realize how great it feels that it’s over and done with, since you did do it and it’s one less thing to worry about. That’s worth celebrating too!
